(1) In Internet Explorer top
menu bar
(a) select VIEW>Encoding
Try various encoding choices. Start with Unicode
(UTF-8); if that doesn't work, select a language encoding you
think might work..
Click on "More" to view many additional language choices.
You may have to install additional fonts (see #9 below).
(b) Select TOOLS>Internet Options>General>Languages.
Here you can add languages for viewing. If your language
is not listed, choose "User Defined" and type in the name of
your language (such as 'Khmer')
(c) Select TOOLS>Internet Options>General>Fonts. Here
you can choose Script type, Web-page fonts, and Plain-text
fonts. If your Script type is not listed, go back to
(1b) above. If no fonts are listed for your Script type, you
will have to download and install free Unicode fonts into your
computer's Fonts folder. See (9) below, or search on
Google for "[language] Unicode fonts." You may have to
reboot after installation.
(2) NETSCAPE and other browsers: language support information is available via Google search or see
old but helpful information
here.
(3)
Enable viewing and editing of Asian fonts through Microsoft
Internet Explorer Multilanguage Support. This is a free
download option when you download Internet Explorer 4 (or
higher) from Microsoft. However, it takes up a lot
of space on your computer and takes a lot of time to download.
(4) If
you have Word 2000/XP or Office 2000/XP, enable viewing and editing
of Asian fonts by going from:
Windows START menu > Programs > Office Tools > MS Office
Language Settings
On 'Enabled Languages' tab, select the languages you want.
(5) You
can download Microsoft's free
Global IME.
which
even allows you to input text.
(6) If
you have Windows 2000/XP, your system has all of the Asian font
viewing, editing, and input options built in. All you
have to do is activate them. For instructions, go to
Start>Help>[fonts, foreign languages, keyboards, languages,
multiple language support, &/OR Unicode]
(7) ADOBE PDF
files: If you cannot view Asian language PDF files on
your computer, you can download Acrobat Reader 7.0 and Asian
Font Packs from Adobe web site for free. The links for the
downloading are as follows:
Download Acrobat Reader
7
Download Asian Font Packs
(8) If
you are willing to buy software, look at
Twinbridge
's
solutions.
(9) Make
sure that you are viewing the page in the correct encoding and
font; these are normally the default fonts:
|
Japanese - MS Mincho or MSGothic
Chinese Traditional (sometimes called
'Big5') - PMingLiu
Chinese Simplified (sometimes called 'GB') - SimSun
Khmer - CDTKhmer.ttf from
http://www.camboday.com/fonts/CDT%20Khmer.ttf
Or download Kh-SrokKhleang.ttf and other fonts through
http://www.cfcambodge.org/KhmerUnicodFont.htm .
(Scroll down that page and click on hyperlink:
kbdkhufr.dll "Khmer Unicode pour le clavier AZERTY".
Running khuAzNt.exe will install various Unicode Khmer
fonts. Click "Ignore" on any "usp10.dll" error.
Reboot before using fonts. Thanks for the above
information from this site:
http://www.travelphrases.info/gallery/Fonts_Khmer.html
TO VIEW KHMER web pages in Internet Explorer, you may
have to add Khmer as a "User-defined" language (see #1b
above) and set up the default fonts for Khmer script
(see #1c above).
Korean - Batang or Gulim
Punjabi - Saab, AnmolUni, Lohit, Raavi or Arial
(download open-source Unicode Punjabi fonts at
http://guca.sourceforge.net/typography/fonts/ )
Hindi - Mangal or Arial
Arabic - Nesf2, Arabic Transparent, or Arial (and select right-to-left orientation)
Vietnamese - Times New Roman, Courier New, or Arial
Thai - Tahoma or Angsana New (or Code2000 - see below)
To view
ANY language (except Khmer): you can
use a 'universal' font such as CODE2000 from
http://home.att.net/~jameskass/ (click on "Click
Here to download CODE2000 shareware...") OR
http://www.slovo.info/unifonts.htm]
OR
use Arial MS Unicode font if you have it. However, these
universal fonts take up a lot of space
on your computer, and can cause time-delays in viewing. |

Finally, if you have MS FrontPage 2000+ installed, there is a
user-friendly section in the HELP file called Language Factors
