Dedication:
My father (1921 - 1996) was an American who fought
against Japanese soldiers in the China-Burma-India Theatre during
WWII. He and his fellow soldiers were encouraged to believe
that their enemies had been so brainwashed they had become dangerous
animals, no longer having the same feelings or values as other human
beings.
Many years
after the war, he met several Japanese people with whom he became
friends: engineers at his workplace, and some of my visiting
Japanese students. He also read a book about the war
experiences of a Japanese soldier in Burma who had been among those
he had been trying to kill. This book, Harp of Burma,
brought him to tears because through it he realized that the 'enemy'
soldiers had felt the same doubts, fears, and hopes as he and his
friends, loved to laugh and sing, and, like all soldiers, most
simply wanted to get out of the war alive so they could get back to
their homes and families. He told me that if he and his
friends had known this then, they would have put down their guns and
refused to fight.

Recognizing one's self in 'the other,' and acknowledging
our common humanity are the first steps along the road to
Peace. |
In this
spirit, I offer these 64 photos, hoping to share with you some of
the warmth I received from the people of Taiwan and the beauty I
found in their small but diverse land. No matter where in the
world you are from, I think you will recognize a friend in at least
one of their smiles.
To those of you from Canada, Taiwan has close to the same population
as Canada (23 million), but its people live on an island almost the
same size as Canada's Vancouver Island! Its government is a
multi-party democracy. Hoping to become a 'Green Silicon
Island' specializing in environmentally-sensitive high-tech
industries, it became a member of the World Trade Organization
in 2002 at the same time as China. With heartfelt prayers and
wishes to all for a peaceful, more understanding world in the coming
millennium...Victoria,
