A Possible Template for a Translator's English CV or Résumé

This is not the last word on CV's or résumé's.  It is only one possible simple way of doing it.  We include this in response to many requests for guidance on what information to include in a simple but effective translator's résumé in English.

1. Title:

  • Résumé of  (your full name & title - can be Mr./Ms./Mrs./Dr.) &/OR (your education - can be B.Sc., M.A., Ph.D., etc.)  
    Examples: Résumé of Carolynn Janet Wu, Ph.D. OR Résumé of Sr. Carlos Roberto Venidos OR Résumé of Ms. Danielle Ramos, M.A. OR Résumé of Dr. Peter Stromm.

2. Contact Information:

  • Full mailing address (including country).  If you put your name or address in characters, also include a phonetic or alphabetic version.  For example, you could have Chinese-character name/address on the first line and a Pin-Yin (phonetic style) name/address beneath it.  The reason is so non-Chinese writers can word-process or type it and alphabetize it in a list of names from many countries.
     
  • Phone numbers.  Be sure to include Country-code.  Note if different numbers for home and work (office) .  Cell and fax numbers are good to include here if you have them.
     
  • E-mail address(es) – double check!
     
  • Website address – double check! (NOTE: if you refer potential customers to your own website, make sure the English in it is perfect)

3. Languages:

  • Language #1 (native speaker)
  • Language #2 (note how you learned it and when)
  • Possible Language #3, etc…. (same as above)

4. Education:

  • List here in reverse chronological order (most recent first):  (degree received) in (subject area - note major and, if applicable, any minor area of study) from (name of university) [City, country, year granted]   
    Example: Master of Fine Arts in English Drama from the University of Washington (Seattle, USA, 1985)
     
  • Note any other degrees you have received, ending with the first degree you attained.   
    Example:  Bachelor of Arts in English Literature (minors in Linguistics and Mathematics) from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada, 1980)

5. Translation samples/list of published or translated works:

  • This section is optional, but is a very powerful way to show customers exactly what you can do.
     
  • You can put your work online, and insert a hyperlink to it in your résumé.
    Example:  See samples of my (our) work online at
    http://www.e-multiweb.com/samples/samples.htm
     
     
  • If you decide to put translation samples inside the actual résumé, we recommend showing the source language text and your translation of it in 2 columns.  Do not make this very long; it is better to divide this into 2 or 3 rows, each with short selections demonstrating different kinds of style and/or topic.   

6. Translation/Localization Experience:

  • Number of years:
    Example:  I have (‘X’) years professional experience translating (Language ‘Y’) > English
     
  • List here your current or most recent translation (or localization) job of significance OR list  translation company(ies) you work for on a regular basis, then various other translation companies you have worked for or other jobs you have done. Note in particular jobs you are particularly proud of, or that you can provide references for.  These should be listed in reverse chronological order (start with most recent)
    Example1: 2001 - Translated an 8,000-word personnel manual from English into Vietnamese for American greenhouse-supply company, ‘Z’ (ask the company first if you want to list them as a reference)
    Example2: 1999  - Provided 20 hours of simultaneous online interpretation over two-week period for several teleconferences between Vietnamese and British firms. Topics: contract negotiation and financing
    Example3: 1997 to 1998 - Assisted firm ‘X’ in translating its online HELP files for software ‘Y’Required familiarity with (list here any computer language[s], localization software,  or other area[s] of expertise that were required for this job).

7. List of computer languages you know plus software you can use and have access to

  • very important, particularly if you seek localization work

8. Other Relevant Experience:

  • Using same format as above, list specific non-translation experience you have had that might be of interest to potential customers, in reverse chronological order.
    Example1: 1999 to present – Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra (Philadelphia, USA) Cellist player, assistant conductor, and composer
    Example2: 1996 to 1998 - Taiwan Semiconductor (Hsinchu, Taiwan) Vice-chairman of the marketing department
    Example3: November, 1994 to March, 1996 - Chinese Culture University (Taipei, Taiwan) Taught English writing in night school MBA program

9. Additional areas of Expertise and Interest

  • List here any other areas of expertise and interest in which you feel competent to translate.  This is a more general version of # 8 above.  Here is a good place to list things in which you are self-taught or your avocations (sports, travel, reading - give specific areas - what KIND of sports, WHERE did you travel, what TYPE of book)  that would make you a good translator in various areas.

10. References:

  • References can be included in the résumé itself.  OR you can simply say, "References available upon request" (however, providing a list of 2 or 3 excellent references is probably better than this). 

  • List here any teachers, company officials, or past customers that are willing to recommend you.  Be sure to ask their permission first.  Note if they cannot speak/read English. List their

    • name
    • company (or institution)
    • e-mail address, phone number, or fax number (at least one of these)
    • country
    • (optional) mailing address
